Nonfiction Fellowship Announced for Fourth Year

The Englert Theatre has named Ilana Bean as the recipient of their fourth annual Nonfiction Writing Fellowship.

Bean is an MFA candidate in University of Iowa’s Nonfiction Writing Program, where she has received the Iowa Arts Fellowship and Stanley Fellowship Award. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Nashville Review, DIAGRAM, Chicago Review of Books, Speculative Nonfiction, and elsewhere. She grew up in Virginia, and writes about biology and art.

“I’m incredibly honored to be selected as the Englert Nonfiction Fellow, and so grateful to everyone at the Englert Theatre for forging this relationship between the Nonfiction Writing Program and the greater arts community of Iowa City. The Englert offers an invaluable space to Iowa City’s creators and performers, and I’m beyond excited to learn more about both the Englert Theatre and the Midwestern arts scene it supports,” said Bean.

The fellowship was created in partnership with the University of Iowa Nonfiction Writing Program to support one writer currently in the program by providing access to the arts. Bean will receive complimentary tickets to all Englert events. At the conclusion of the fellowship, Bean’s work will be featured in a public reading at The Englert Theatre.

“We are thrilled to be able to continue our collaboration with the University of Iowa’s Nonfiction Writing Program. The submissions that we receive for the fellowship every year are a testament to the talent that comes through the program. We’re happy that we get to play a small part in supporting Ilana as she expands her engagement with the Arts here in Iowa City,” said John Schickedanz, Interim Executive Director of The Englert Theatre.

Programs like the Nonfiction Writing Fellowship are made possible through the generous support of the Friends of the Englert. More information about the program is available at englert.org/friends.
