Contrary to popular belief, the creek has a mission beyond reaching the river. 2014′s Mission Creek Festival was the biggest co-creative effort of the Englert since its re-inception as a music hall and performance venue. Though Iowa City is not short of high volume music and arts festivals, the Mission Creek festival offered a full-on sensory experience – taste, literary, performance art, music, etc.
Venues throughout Iowa City hosted a variety of events, and The Englert welcomed (among others) Laurie Anderson, comedian Hannibal Buress, The Head and the Heart, and world-renowned composer and pianist Philip Glass to its stage.
The Mission Creek Festival has exploded since its grassroots debut in 2006. This year, over 200 musicians, performers, and authors took part in the week-long event. 2014 also marked the premier of an Tech + Innovation Conference at the Pappajohn Business Building and co-sponsored screenings with FilmScene, Iowa City’s newest indie cinema. Stay tuned for what spring 2015 will bring!
