Art is community. It’s Salsa Night at Dream City and the Disability Community Social at The Green House. It’s free music at the Northside Series and Blues & Barbeque. It’s Night Moves and Upchuck at Gabe’s. It’s Courtney Marie Andrews and Deb Talan doing a song swap on stage at Trumpet Blossom Cafe while eating local apple cake. It’s Loudon Wainwright III at The James Theatre and Battle of the Bands at UAY. It’s Dave Moore and his longtime friends taking The Englert stage to perform his beloved songs, celebrating community, musicianship, and storytelling.
We see every day how art brings people together and pushes our community forward. It’s where local musicians support touring artists, where neighbors stand shoulder to shoulder listening to something new, and where ideas that start small find room to grow.
In 2025, The Englert celebrated its 20th anniversary as a nonprofit performing arts organization. We also turned a new page: launching the inaugural Iowa City Songwriters Festival. This year, The Englert presented more than 100 events and 196 artists, 81 of whom are based right here in Iowa. These performances graced not only The Englert’s historic stage but venues and gathering spaces throughout our community.
Now more than ever, we need independent venues and safe spaces to experience art. We need beauty, laughter, awe, and togetherness. The Englert remains committed to being a pillar of our community as it grows and changes through these times, and we need your support to keep that momentum going. Our mission is to ensure that art stays at the heart of the community in Iowa City – now, and for generations to
come.
