About “Beer Money: A Tale of the Iowa City Beer Mafia” S.C. Sherman’s book is a captivating feat of historical fiction set during the 1880s clash between prohibitionists and the three most powerful brewers in Iowa City—known as “The Beer Mafia.” Conrad Graf, J.J. Englert and John Dostal thought of themselves as honest businessmen capitalizing on America’s explosive growth by simply providing a product people wanted. “Teetotalers” thought they were selling sin and destroying everything that made America great, one beer at a time. The more powerful the brewers grew, the more passionate prohibitionists became abut abolishing alcohol altogether.

About the Beer Cave Tours18 lucky “Beer Money” book buyers will be entered to win this is a once in a lifetime experience to tour the historic underground of Iowa City’s famous Bier Caves with the State Archaeologist Marlin Ingles and John’s Grocery own Bier Guy-Doug Alberhasky. This tour starts at Brewery Square, home of the Holtz and Geiger/Union/Graf brewing company. We’ll travel back to the 1870’s and descend almost 30 feet into the underworld. Not for the faint of heart, this tour into Bier caves will have you climb down a 24’ ladder where you will come into contact with Iowa City’s rich brewing heritage. Upon successfully exiting (hopefully with a huge thirst), we will then travel down the block to the tasting room of John’s Grocery, where Doug will lead you and your crew on a power point tour of the History of Beer in Iowa City. Included with this is hand picked selections of world class beers to sample. Dates for the tour are flexible, based on Marlin and Doug’s availability.
