For more than a decade, Andy Schmidt of Starman Press has created beautiful, handmade screenprinted gig posters for Mission Creek Festival shows. GZA, Andrew Bird, Julien Baker, Sqürl, Father John Misty, Das Racist, and many more have earned this honor.
Schmidt began printing posters and band tees in 2006, and in 2011 started printing under the name Starman Press, a name that pays homage to his favorite song and his late-night working habits. Schmidt has printed more than 44 gig posters for Mission Creek, and more than 105 total for events including Pitchfork Festival, Bumbershoot, and the Treefort Festival. He has been a member of the American Poster Institute (API) since 2011.
“I keep coming back ’cause it’s one of my favorite weeks of the year, and I owe a lot of the success I’ve had to Mission Creek for giving me my start,” he said.
We have pulled a selection from our archives of Schmidt’s work, on display in the Douglas and Linda Paul Gallery at The Englert Theatre. The exhibit will premiere at Iowa City Gallery Walk this Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. The exhibit will be on display through Mission Creek Festival 2019 on April 2-7.
