Description
Summer of the Arts and the Iowa City Jazz Festival present a very special late-night concert featuring Whirlpool with Ron Miles. Didn’t get your fill of jazz during the regular programming on the Pentacrest? Then come down to the Englert to keep the party going.
Whirlpool is a Chicago-based trip featuring Caroline Davis (saxophone, vocals), Jeff Swanson (guitar), and Charles Rumback (drums). They joined together in 2012 for a house concert series honoring the late drummer Paul Motian. His vision for a bass-less trio was the impetus for Whirlpool, but the music has taken on a new voice since its inception. Given the diversity of the musicians in this outfit, the music explores boundaries between genres and includes some covers by Paul Motian, Steve Winwood, and Thelonious Monk.
The trio is occasionally joined by trumpeter Ron Miles, a veteran of the Iowa City Jazz Festival as a leader and as a sideman with acts like guitarist Bill Frisell.
