From intimate, on-stage performances to school band concerts to live theatre, the Englert’s stage can accommodate a wide variety of performance types, and our professional lighting, sound, and front of house staff produce smooth, efficiently-run events in the historic space.
Intimate Performances—For smaller groups of 100 people or less, our intimate setting invites an electrifying, personal atmosphere with chairs set up onstage so that the audience and performers intermix without separation. In this smaller setting, the Englert stage feels like an exclusive club, and past audiences have been engaged in musical, literary, spoken word, and theatrical events in this environment.
Music, Orchestra, Concerts, Choruses—With the theater’s excellent acoustics, professional sound and lighting staff, and sophisticated atmosphere, we regularly host the Iowa City String Orchestra, Old Capitol Chorus, Community Band Concert, Gathe Raho (an annual South Asian a cappella competition), Chase Garrett’s Blues & Boogie Woogie Piano Stomp, and other community-centered, musical events.
Theatre—From Working Group Theatre’s intimate In the Raw drama series to the premier production of Old Capitol Opera’s Chicago to family-focused performance such as Visible Fictions’ Jason and the Argonauts and America’s Got Talent semi-finalist Lightwire Theatre, the Englert has played host to both community and professional theatrical performances.
